Kathy was delighted to be interviewed by Live Booleans.
Presenters Kosta and Alex are passionate about the game development scene in Adelaide, South Australia, and they put Kathy through her paces, asking her about the game dev scene, what it was like to do a GCAP talk, what it was like to run Kickstarter campaigns, and of course, about Frog's Princess!

Kathy has the honour of speaking at GCAP 2020 this year. The problem was, she had proposed doing a skit and powerpoint presentation, and they gave her 18 days to come up with a video! The South Australian Film Corporation kindly supplied the "small" sound stage at Adelaide Studios (it was huge), and she hired a camera, lights, and mikes and all sorts of things in many bags with many cables which Kristian Leadbeater wrangled. Voice actor Gabriel Allani pretended to be a voice actor (!) and actor Dylan Warren (also a voice actor) acted as the recording engineer. Kathy was a bumbling producer doing everything wrong. We filmed 22 minutes of video in one day. Kristian edited it, splicing an additional 7 minutes of powerpoint slides into it. Kathy recorded the voice-over and put some of Christian Paterson's wonderful music for background music. She co-opted her AGD discord co-founder Arthur Ah Chee to help answer questions at the end, as he used to work at the Impala TV station in Alice Springs. Supporting material to help other game devs with dialogue recording sessions is available on Kathy's designer website: https://kathysmartgamedesigner.com/recording-dialog.html
The best part about the whole exercise is that Gabriel Allani produced a Wilhelm scream which will be made available to GCAP game devs for free.
We have already put in the action narration telling players what is happening on the screen. Now Scott has implemented the UI Accessibility Plugin from MetalPop Games which tells players about every button so they can play Frog's Princess even if they can't see it.
Here is Scott showing what it is like to use the Save Menu using the accessibility feature. The Frog's Princess team has many talents.
Here, our programmer Scott Purcival reads a hilarious children's book for patrons of the Western Downs Library system in Queensland.
Adam Klappers surpassed himself by wrangling 478 citizens and soldiers in the final crowd scene.
If you look very closely at the top left, you will see the carriage arriving at the palace, and Francis jumping off to greet his father. We have re-recorded many of the music videos featuring Chris Paterson's beautiful themes and now we have a complete set! https://frogsprincess.com/music.html
Kathy was honoured to present Frog's Princess at the online conference, and also sit on a panel about multi-modal storytelling.
Hilda's soldiers have trapped the Witch in a net, and Ramona's magic is keeping her there, but the net is burning up. Francis asks Emma to do something, but she says she can only work good magic. She has an idea - can Francis make the Witch angry enough to do something stupid?
Different princes might go about this in different ways... We are delighted to announce that all extra text for people with hearing impairment, and extra narration for people with vision impairment, is in game. |
